Worried about hair loss?  You’re not the only one, it’s estimated that over 40% of men in their 20’s experience hair loss and this trend accelerates with age. Hair loss can be traumatic, but don’t panic just yet, as there are many methods which can help slow down your hair loss.

What Causes Hair Loss?

There are numerous factors which contribute to hair loss; this includes poor health, diet and stress. However, the biggest influence on hair loss is the male hormone Dihydrotestosterone (DHT)

DHT is a male hormone which affects the hair follicles causing the hair to shrink, thin and eventually fall out. The membrane wall of the scalp thickens and slows circulation effecting nutrition to the hair follicle. This effects the re-growth of the new hair until it stops completely.  Over time the effect of DHT on hair loss become more obvious as hairs are lost and not replaced.

What action can you take to reduce your hair loss?

1.       Diet

Focus on your diet and choose healthy food options. Stock up on foods rich in Vitamin B, zinc and iron. Vitamin C is also beneficial in reducing hair loss; rich fruits such as Kiwis help the body to retain nutrients essential for hair health.  Concentrate on lean proteins, whole grains and vegetables; these will improve the strength of the hair.

2.       Quit Smoking

Research by Harvard School of Public Health suggests that smoking increases the level of DHT hormones that speed up hair loss. Smoking also restricts the blood vessels that supply the scalp, reducing the amount of nutrients reaching the hair.

3.       Shampoo Hair

When the scalp is not healthy and clean it affects the rate of hair growth. Using styling creams and products and leaving them in your hair can produce a build up of sebum which can have a negative effect on the hair follicle. Keep your bonce clean by using a quality shampoo regularly to stave of hair loss.

4.       Use Sunscreen

Sunburn effects the scalp causing it to produce a compound named ‘Superoxide’ that increases the rate of hair loss by causing the hair follicles to go from a growth phase to a shedding one. Protect your hair using sunscreen.

5.     Hair Drying

The hair on your head is three times weaker when wet, excessive towel drying and over combing can damage  the hair follicle and speed up hair loss. Instead, let your hair dry naturally; use your hair dryer on a cool setting.
